Winterfest 2022: Pagosa Springs, Colorado’s Festival of Winter Fun Winterfest 2022 is here and Pagosa Springs, Colorado is ready to host a spectacular winter festival. From January 21-23, residents and visitors alike will get to enjoy a variety of winter activities and events, all of which are sure to make for a fun-filled weekend.

Included in the festivities was the Hot Air Balloon Mass Ascensions, Sled Races, Cross Country Ski Clinic, Fat Bike Race, BB Gun Biathlon, Penguin Plunge, and much more.

The festival will kick off with the Hot Air Balloon mass ascension, featuring a variety of different balloons rising above the valley. After the balloons, you can stick around for the rest of the days activities such as the sled races, ski clinics and BB gun biathlon. The festival will also feature a variety of outdoor activities, such as snowshoeing, ice skating, snow tubing, and sledding. You can also take part in a variety of winter sports, such as snowmobiling, skiing, and snowboarding. If you’re looking for a more relaxed experience with excitement you can also enjoy Skijoring.

Skijor Pagosa is an adventure competition where horse and rider pull a skier or snowboarder as fast as possible through an obstacle course of jumps, gates and rings. Participants compete for cash and prizes based on the fastest times.

Skijor Pagosa Springs

For two days at the Archuleta fair grounds, men women and kids took to the Skijor races to compete for prizes. The Skis and Saddles group ran the event this year bringing in people from around the country to compete in this years event. Skijor Pagosa runs a horse, with a rider, through a snow covered course. Horses pull the ‘riders’ through the course as they grasp a rope to hang on. The fastest competitor to slalom through gates, jumps and banked corners wins.

Hot Air Balloon Mass Ascensions

Each day a plethora of hot air balloons would ascend the skis to start the morning off. Balloonists from around the area come into town for the weekend in order to participate in the ascensions. It’s a picturesque time of the day with many different colored balloons in the sky against the San Juan Mountain backdrop.

Other Winterfest 2022 Pagosa Events

Other events are scattered around town over the two day stretch of Winterfest 2022. One of the more interesting and fun events was the Sled races on Res Hill. Participants decorated and built unique sleds and competed against one another down the sled hill.
