Turkey Springs Trail System

The Turkey Springs Trail System is a multi-use area of the San Juan National Forest, offering Hiking, Mountain Biking, Horseback Riding, All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) riding, Cross Country Skiing, Snow Shoeing, and Snowmobiling, basically any outdoor activity that you can think of. The main entrance to the trail system is off of Piedra Road just outside of town. However, multiple Forest Service gates off of North Pagosa Blvd allow access to the trail system and may be less crowded. The trail system is a very popular destination year round due to the proximity to town and multiple use capabilities.

30 Miles of Hiking and Mountain Biking Trails

Offering 30 miles of interconnected trails for non-motorized use, the Turkey Springs Trail system is ideal for hiking and mountain biking. By combining any of the 14 interconnected trails allows you to hike or bike any distance you desire. The mostly flat trails make the Turkey Springs Trail System appropriate for the novice to the intermediate user.

There are two primary access points, the main Turkey Springs Trailhead or the Forest Service Gate 5. The main Turkey Springs Trailhead is off of Piedra Rd, 6 miles north of US 160. The Gate 5 entrance is at Martinez Creek off of North Pagosa Blvd, 3.6 miles north of US 160. Note that the main Turkey Springs Trailhead can become very busy and loud due it being the main access point for ATVs and Snowmobiles.

Suggested Turkey Spring Trail Hikes

  • #312 Upper Rim Trail, #305 Newt Jack Trail- This loop trail is a flat 3.9 miles and a perfect distance for a short hike for anyone
  • #305 Newt Jack Trail , #315 Bear Trail, #313 Catamount Trail, #311Creek Trail and #312 Upper Rim Trail – This is another short loop at 3.95 miles but has more undulations when navigating by the creek.

ATV Riding Trails

While the hiking and biking trails support non-motorized use, the Turkey Springs Trail System also offers trails for ATV Riding. Consisting of a single loop road with several offshoots, there many route options. The loop itself is 14 miles long and is best accessed from the main trailhead off of Piedra Rd. The Turkey Springs System is adjacent to several other ATV friendly trails, allowing for longer rides. Ample parking is available at Turkey Springs trailhead for loading and unloading ATVs.

A secondary trailhead for ATVs is located on East Monument Rd, and offers another starting location for riding withing the Turkey Creek System. To access this trailhead, drive north on Piedra Road, just past the main Turkey Springs Trailhead to Turkey Springs Rd. Take a left onto Turkey Springs Road and drive 1.8 miles to East Monument Rd., and turn Right on East Monument Rd. In addition to accessing the main ATV loop trail, there are additional singleshot trails.
