- Williams Creek Trail #587
The trail begins north of Williams Lake on the east side of Cimarrona Peak and runs along Williams Creek. Don’t be fooled by the name, the hike does follow the creek, however the trail leads uphill, bringing you well above the creek itself. Rising over 700 ft in the first 2 miles can be a strain for the beginner, but after the 2 mile mark, the trail levels off and travels through a beautiful meadow. Enjoy the rest, as there are another 2800 ft up to the intersection with the Continental Divide Trail. Scenic views of wildflowers, forests and mountains make for excellent photo opportunities.
Horseback Trail
Horses are allowed on the trail, in fact the campsites at the Palisades Campgrounds have corrals for and are reserved for those camping with their horses. Williams Creek Trail is also popular as a starting point for multi-day pack trips into the Weminuche Wilderness and San Juan Mountains. Be mindful of horses on the trail as they always have the right-of-way.
