- Opal Lake Trailhead No. 564
The Opal Lake Hike is a short 2.5 mile out and back requiring a 500 ft climb ending at the lake. The trail is popular during the summer and fall months, therefore the path is easy to follow. Starting at an altitude of 8700ft and climbing an additional 500 ft in 1.25 miles can be strenuous for some. In other words, if altitude affects you or one of your party, take it slow and steady. Several stopping points along the way are worth extra time, especially during the fall when the leaves change color. Hiking through aspen groves on the short hike are worthy of a stop.
Opal Lake is located in the South San Juan Wilderness. The backdrop includes wooded hills and mountain faces surrounding the lake. The color of the lake is due to the minerals that turn the lake an opal color.
After arriving at the lake and observing the scenery, make sure to continue on the trail around the lake. Traversing the trail to the other side of the lake produces a new vantage point including a view of the springs that feed the lake. On the backside of the lake, the mountain faces are viewable along the east range.
Animal Friendly
The trail, lake and wilderness area allow dogs and horses.
