Visitors and locals of our charming mountain town of Pagosa Springs were treated to an extraordinary celestial spectacle last night as the aurora borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights, painted the sky with vibrant hues of green and red. This rare event has left both locals and tourists in awe, creating unforgettable memories for all who witnessed it. Although the Northern Lights over Pagosa Springs have been viewable through a camera lens, this show was viewable by the naked eye.
A Surprise Show in Southern Colorado
While the Northern Lights are typically associated with more northern latitudes, a particularly strong geomagnetic storm allowed this breathtaking phenomenon to be visible much further south than usual. Pagosa Springs, nestled in the San Juan Mountains, provided an ideal backdrop for viewing the lights, with its dark skies and stunning natural beauty enhancing the experience.
Understanding the Northern Lights
The aurora borealis is a natural light display caused by collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun entering the Earth’s atmosphere. These particles are usually deflected by the Earth’s magnetic field, which is why the aurora is typically only visible near the magnetic poles.
For the Northern Lights to be visible as far south as Colorado, a perfect storm of solar activity must occur. This includes an intense solar flare or coronal mass ejection from the sun, coupled with the right conditions in Earth’s magnetosphere. Such events are rare, making the recent aurora sighting in Pagosa Springs truly special.
The vibrant colors we witnessed – primarily greens and reds– are caused by different types of gas particles colliding with the charged particles from the sun. Oxygen produces green and red light, while nitrogen is responsible for blue and purple hues.

While the aurora borealis was an unexpected treat, Pagosa Springs offers a wealth of natural wonders year-round. From our world-famous hot springs to the surrounding national forests teeming with wildlife, there’s always something magical to experience here.
